Our Voice, Our Vote Executive Director Sena Mohammed: “President Trump’s federal budget is a declaration of war on the working class”

July 9, 2025

On Friday, July 4, Donald Trump signed a sweeping budget reconciliation package into law. In response, Our Voice, Our Vote Executive Director Sena Mohammed released the following statement:

“President Trump’s federal budget is a declaration of war on the working class. The marginal relief Arizonans will get when they file their taxes in April is a small consolation prize compared with what has been stolen from us. This bill is an assault on our right to health, food security, economic mobility, and freedoms. This is an attack on us.

“While an Arizona resident making $5 million will get a tax break of around $165,000, nearly a million Arizonans risk losing their medical coverage and food assistance benefits. The average Arizonan will see their energy bills skyrocket, their air polluted, and their job prospects shrink. Arizona could also see an explosion of ICE operations as the bill funnels $45 billion into the expansion of immigration detention centers, putting the weight of the federal government behind terrorizing our immigrant communities.

“It is hard to overstate how egregious this bill is for Arizona’s poor and working class. Yet we must recognize our power as the new American majority and our responsibility to fight back. Progress is a constant struggle—one that will require all of us to renew our commitment to shape the future we want. We will never, never stop fighting for the Arizona we believe in.”

Here is how the bill will hit Arizonans hardest:

  • Strips medical coverage from 270,000 Arizonans, nearly half of whom are children

  • Reduces rural Medicaid spending by $3.19 billion in Arizona, making it difficult for rural hospitals to remain open and increasing the distance rural Arizonans have to travel to receive health care

  • Kicks 449,000 Arizona families off of food assistance entirely, and significantly reduces benefits for thousands more through SNAP cuts and increased work requirements

  • Increases annual energy bills by $775 million across Arizona households annually in 2030

  • Jeopardizes over 10,000 clean energy jobs across the state
